Did you know that Kidney stones are 10 times as common as they were in the early 1900’s?

Kidney stones are 10 times as common now as they were in the early 1900’s. While the consumption of foods high in oxalic acid (mostly eggs, fish and certain vegetables) has declined, the amount of animal fats and protein the average American diet has increased. Fluoridation of drinking water may increase the risk of kidney stone formation. Low fluid intake is a huge risk for increased risk of kidney stone formation. Excessive vitamin D supplementation may increase the risk of stone formation by increasing the intestinal absorption of calcium. Diets in Western nations typically contain more animal protein than the body needs. Urinary excretion of excess sulfurous amino acids (e.g., cysteine and methionine), uric acid and other acidic metabolites from animal protein acidifies the urine, which promotes the formation of kidney stones. The American Urological Association has projected that increased temperature will lead to an increased incidence of kidney stones in the United States. They have expanded the “kidney stone belt” of the Southwest United States.

To help reduce the risk:

Drink plenty of Kinetico K5 water.   The first most important measure to prevent stones from forming is to increase water consumption.   Water dilutes urine and helps prevent concentrations of the minerals and salts that can cause stones. Do not drink only if you’re thirsty.  In addition, as we grow older the thirst mechanism sometimes doesn’t work as well. It is recommended that we drink enough water to produce at least 2 Liters of urine (68 Ounces) per day. A simpler way to know if you are drinking enough water is to check the color of your urine; you want your urine to be clear or a very light yellow.  Maintenance of dilute urine by means of vigorous fluid therapy is beneficial in all forms. Increasing urine volume is a key principle for the prevention of kidney stones.  A high fluid intake has been associated with a 40% reduction in recurrence risk. Every person’s water requirement is different, depending on your particular system and activity level, but simply keeping your urine clear or light yellow will go a long way toward preventing kidney stones. For most people, drinking enough water to keep your urine clear requires about 8 to 10 glasses of water a day. That is a great start however; we should also add 8 ounces for each 10 lbs of body-weight above the norm. Then add 8 ounces for each 10 degrees above 72, add 8 ounces for every decade of life above 40 and add 8 ounces for increased physical activity. That equals a lot of water however; your body will quickly adjust.  If you ever sense thirst, that indicates the body is about one pint low – to replace that one pint takes more than three (3) days of full hydration. It is best to hydrate on a continuous basis a great 2015 target goal is 8 ounces every hour you are awake.
